Prešov, with a population of over 90,000, is the third largest city in Slovakia and administrative center of the Prešov Region. The closest cities are (as air distance in km) Košice (38), Uzhgorod (96), Miskolc (115), Tarnow (128), Budapest (250), Bratislava (345).
The old town is a national monument with many beautiful historical buildings. Prešov is interesting for visitors especially with its valuable historical monuments. The sacral dominant of the town is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. Lutheran College from 1667 is also an architectural gem. Nearby the city is Solivar - National Historic Landmark, exposition of technical objects for the drawing and cooking salt. Complex from the 17th century is one of the most important industrial monuments in Slovakia.
Among the popular places of interest belong the ruins of the Šariš, Kapušiansky, Zbojnický castle and cave Bad hole. A frequent tourist destination are famous Dubnícke opal mines. The world-famous Slovak opals had been mined mainly in the late 19th century.
